Nurse Call Annunciator Display: What You Need to Know

The annunciator is one of the pieces of hardware necessary in the nurse call system. It represents the location and alert type of the call in message text form. The annunciator usually uses a 12-character LED display that illuminates when there is a message alert from the inputs of the nurse call system, such as the call button, input switch, and security inputs.

Where is the Nurse Call Display Annunciator commonly used?

In large facilities such as hospitals and aged care centers, you can find such annunciators because nurses know where the call came from faster. You will find annunciators in the hallway and nurse stations. Because the small facilities still use a smaller display, its functionalities are just like an annunciator, but instead of LED, it uses an LCD numeric display like the pagers.

Why use a Nurse Call Display Annunciator?

The old nurse call systems had only small displays. They were installed in nurse stations. Others still use telephone-type nurse call systems where the call from the patient's bedhead is received by this phone and the nurse will know what room number the caller is in because it can be seen on the small display or with the LEDs assigned to each room.

So it is essential to have a bigger annunciator because its characters can be read faster and, in an emergency situation, even if the nurse is walking, it can see which room is called without having to go back to the nurse station.

What is the colour of the LED display?

Both the call button membrane and the alert type messages on annunciators use different colours in the messages to distinguish which call alert requires early response time or not. The nurse call system can push the message to the annunciator display with the call location, priority, sound, and color. Messages such as "EM W1 RM5" mean "Emergency in Ward 1 Room Number 5. These are the following alert display colours found on the LED annunciators:

  • Red-for emergency call alerts.
  • Yellow-for Assist Call alerts.
  • Green-for Nurse Call Alerts
  • Blue-for Nurse Presence Call Alerts.

What are the different kinds of nurse call display annunciator?

Currently, there are two types of annunciators. One is used in the old nurse call system that still uses 485 bus communication. The other class is more modern because it is PoE enabled, which means it uses ethernet networks for communication and delivery of the message to the annunciator.

Annunciator for 485 Bus.

It requires 485 bus drivers to process the call alert into a readable text message. This annunciator uses a 2-wire connector using an RJ11 jack. Its power needs to be supplied separately for the annunciator to work. It usually does not have a speaker included, but if a speaker is required for alerting sound, other 485 Annunciator Drivers have a port for it. It also has a time display, but you need to set it manually.

PoE-Type Annunciator

The PoE Type Annunciators are supplied with PoE power from the PoE enabled network switches. The method of communication is through the ethernet standards. These innovative annunciators already have speakers included in their casing. And it has more features compared to the 485 Bus type annunciators.

Similar the old type system, this hardware has advanced time setup, the annunciator can display the time when there are no active calls on the screen. The time and date can be adjusted through the web-based application portal of this hardware. Another nice feature of it is having a programmable sound volume in night and day mode. Personalized Sound Alerts for different types of call priority and many more.
